Hearing those words “you have cancer” is a life changing event. Cancer and its effects impact not only its victims but all those who are involved in their daily lives. Acting both as a responsible treatment and resource center, the Belize Cancer Center takes every opportunity to be both informative and proactive by educating Belizeans about the various types of cancers affecting the country as well the early signs that medical treatment is required.

Cancers Affecting Belizeans:

Breast Cancer
Cervical Cancer
Lung Cancer
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (in children)

Prostate Cancer
Ovarian Cancer
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Colorectal Cancer

When to seek help:

There is no clearly defined symptom that cancer may be affecting your body, however there are signs that should not be ignored and are important enough to warrant a doctor’s appointment:

Weight Loss:
There are numerous causes of weight loss, however in some cases weight loss has been attributed to the onset of cancer cell reproduction. Experiencing rapid weight loss with no direct cause should result in a visit to your doctor.

Severe Fatigue:
Extreme tiredness that does not seem to be remedied by getting rest can mean that something more severe is at hand and should be taken seriously. Cancer uses the nutrients in the body to grow. The consumption of these nutrients results in a severe loss of energy.

Fever:
A fever is our body’s natural defense against foreign bodies being introduced into the system and most fevers arise from a common cold, flu or infection. However, certain fevers can have a possible cancer connection, especially if they: occur mostly at night, develop without any sign of infection and come in the form of night sweats.

Pain:
This is also a symptom that stems from my different causes but cancerous pain can be caused by the growth of a tumor touching other areas of the body, the chemicals being introduced by the cancer, and the spreading of the cancer from where it started.

Lumps/Moles:
These blemishes can be seen on the skin sometimes as early as birth and pose no threat. The sudden appearance or growth of a mole, or the emergence of a lump (especially in the breasts, scrotum or near the prostate) are occurrences that should be relayed to your doctor right away for professional examination.

There are other symptoms that have been linked to cancer, and because they may not be clear-cut we recommend scheduling regular check-ups to prevent an increased severity of any and all illnesses.
